Searching for a comprehensive software solution to prevent unnecessary background programs from running and to detect any errors that could be hindering Windows 7 performance following a recent crash three months ago. I'm considering a full system refresh if I can't resolve the issues.

Additional context: Three months prior, my graphics card failed despite replacement; even with newer cards, it hasn't improved. I've used mini DP for a multi-monitor setup. About a month ago, an old hard drive caused startup freezes, leading to a failed recovery attempt. USB ports stopped working after driver updates, though USB 2 remained functional. The PC is now extremely slow, and I'm contemplating a Windows 7 reinstall.

What distinguishes "unneeded programs" is their absence from the system, often linked to unresolved issues like a failing drive.

Nothing extra required to keep my computer, programs, files, or internet running smoothly. Just want to confirm there are no viruses or unwanted software left, and that everything is in order. It doesn’t bother me, but my startup now takes four minutes instead of two, so something must have gone wrong during the crash or the fix. I’m trying to find a program or software to resolve this issue.

I ran msconfig to adjust the startup settings, which turned out to be a big mistake for me. It took me a whole day to correct it, and now I don’t want to mess with the settings again.

If there existed software capable of resolving everything, people would rely on it instead of forums like these.
Some antimalware tools can identify if an installer includes a "Potentially unwanted program" or PUP, but in reality, most PUPs can be avoided by refraining from automatically clicking "Next" or using the "Express" installation option. Otherwise, reducing the OS by itself is risky unless you fully understand what you're doing, the purpose of the item being removed, and have a clear strategy. Even then, future issues might arise where something you want to use causes unclear errors related to past changes in the operating system.

Reinstalling Windows 7 may resolve some issues but not necessarily fix everything. It's possible the problem persists. Regarding your motherboard, the loss of USB 3 and audio could indicate a hardware issue that needs further investigation.

the simplest method is referred to as autoruns, which is a microsoft power user tool. it displays everything beginning with the system and lets you pause or delay all of it.
don't panic and only disable what you're certain you don't need—it's wise. for example, you likely have 10 "auto-updater" processes running, plus steam, origin, and other game launchers that start automatically, along with a few other obvious items you can turn off at boot.

Therefore, take away elements from your startup. There is no special tool to identify exactly what you require. Likewise, there is no perfect solution for "fixing everything."

Following the crash, I installed a system update hoping it would resolve the issues, but I'm concerned it might have caused further problems.

don't know. updates sometimes affect random users.
have you looked into checking the windows file integrity?
you can run sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt to scan system files and fix any corrupt or missing ones.

You recently attempted to open a zip file but encountered freezing issues, and you're unsure what might have caused it. It seems like something unusual happened today, and you haven't been online.
