Hello, I have more than 20 different laptops and am looking for an operating system that works smoothly across all of them. I use them mostly for studying and work, so I need simple file sharing and app updates. I also want the ability to use my Android phone without major issues. That sounds reasonable, right? Dillon

It seems you're considering a NAS setup with Windows profile backups. This approach ensures your login data stays synchronized across devices. It’s worth noting that many people adopt this method when they need reliable access across multiple machines without purchasing separate licenses.

I see an issue here. It seems no single individual really manages 20 laptops, especially not in an efficient manner. For accessing or sharing files, a NAS or online solution would be better.

Syncthing works well for syncing files between devices, though it typically requires one device to remain active as the central hub. Running it across 20 devices is possible but impractical and may slow performance. Beyond that, it’s inefficient and environmentally unfriendly due to unnecessary resource use.

I operate all these tools in my office setting, not at a school (quiet around kids), and I’m likely to address my issue soon.

It seems your request is about clarifying a vague query. Could you provide more specifics about the goal you have in mind? For example, which computers are involved, what synchronization process you need, and any particular constraints or requirements? This will help me give a more accurate and useful response.

I'm aiming to be able to switch between laptops smoothly, using one without any hassle and quickly picking up another, just like with macOS but without the issues.

Sign in with your MS account on every device, then access OneDrive. All your preferences stay updated, and your private documents work across all devices and browsers. You don’t need a NAS.

You're seeking a solution that manages numerous devices and controls seamlessly. This is challenging. At a minimum, rely on a cloud platform that automatically updates folders across profiles to every device. If you aim for complete unification—setting, configurations, files all syncing consistently—you're dealing with complex system administration. For an even more advanced approach, transform laptops into lightweight clients without local OS or files, linking them to virtual desktops hosted on a central server. The desktop remains active on the server while you switch terminals.
