Software for personal virtual machines
Hey everyone, I’m looking for your ideas on a suitable setup. I’m using Windows 10 Pro and need VMWare Workstation 12 Pro with VMware Player 12 and Hyper-V included. My goal is to run a Win 2012 R2 server with SQL Server across multiple VMs—about three per version. These will mostly stay in the background while I work on development or use SSMS/Visual Studio. In the future, I want to:
1. Set up a Linux environment to practice building and testing Oracle VMs (they’re made for VirtualBox and easy to import).
2. Deploy VMs across different networks that connect via Active Directory to experiment with clustering using Windows AlwaysOn groups for SQL Server.
The cost of VMWare Workstation isn’t a big concern, and the two points above are pretty minor. If I could smoothly move between environments, I’d prefer free alternatives.
I recently tried VMWare Workstation 12 Pro and noticed a significant drop in peripheral responsiveness. My webcam became extremely sluggish during Skype calls while the VM was active. It’s unclear if this is due to my setup or something else, but overall performance is quite poor.
For systems with specialized equipment, VMWare ESXi is worth considering. Without that, Hyper-V offers an alternative, though its administration isn't ideal.
It seems you're asking about previous configurations. Could you clarify which settings you're referring to?
Settings – processor count, memory, and other details for your virtual machine during initial setup. Should I install the software on the VM? hehe
