Steam Controller is great for 3D adventure games, though not quite as good as a 360 controller for 2D platformers. For a MegaMan-style platformer on PC, you'd likely prefer something more traditional like a standard gaming mouse and keyboard.

2D platformers generally perform best with a responsive D-Pad, making the PS4 or Xbone controllers ideal options. Controllers from the PS3 (particularly the Xbox 360) offer poor D-Pad performance.

I rely on my PS1 controller because it works with a USB adapter I own, which also supports the GameCube controller and the original Xbox.

The DualShock 4 works well, but the D-pad feels a bit odd. The Xbox 360 controller is not great for 2D titles because of that D-pad. I’m unsure if the Xbox One controller has been fully upgraded. A SNES-style controller might suit 2D games better.

I'm focusing on the NES clone, though many seem quite poor.

I recently purchased a dual shock controller for my fighting games since the one I had was causing me to miss directional inputs. I think you might have a comparable issue with platformers too. Regardless of what I do now, it's clearly impossible to miss my inputs with this device. Sony truly produces the best dpads.

I tested the Wii U controller yesterday. It showed promise, yet there were numerous issues with making it function properly on a PC.
