I previously ran a Minecraft server with Hamachi, but it wasn't the best option. Now that I have a powerful PC, I'm considering turning it into a server to host game servers. I'm curious if there are suitable software solutions available and whether this is even feasible. Please let me know your thoughts!

You want instructions to set up a server by opening port 2565, sharing its IP with friends, and adding a whitelist for security.

Hamachi is a tool that eliminates the need for port forwarding. If you prefer not to use Hamachi, you must manually set up port forwarding in your router. For alternatives, you can obtain server software from minecraft.net or spigotmc.org to add custom plugins.

You can't simply download the server and share its IP with friends. You need to first set it up on a specific IP address you're targeting. Think of it like renting space from a hosting provider, but instead of using their network, you'll manage it from your own PC. I'm aiming for that setup. I don't want to rely on Hamachi since it would require connecting through your local network and limits you to around 6-8 miles.

The IP address your ISP assigned you, Your friends link up via that IP and the corresponding port. That’s the method we’ve used consistently.

To find the IP address, you need to determine which one it is and understand how the connection works.

Check with your ISP regarding your IP address. You may need a static IP. They establish connections by starting Minecraft and incorporating your server.

Check the server settings to see if the IP needs to be included there.

Acknowledged, I have limited experience setting up servers on my own machine. I’ve worked with both hosting providers and private servers. Essentially, you download the server files, open necessary ports, and launch the server. The rest involves configuration tasks. I’ve attempted this before but struggled due to a very strict firewall. Back in the day when Operation Flashpoint was released, I hosted a server through my friend Hamachi’s network. In short, you can manage it, but be aware of your firewall settings.
