You’re weighing your options for a laptop as you prepare for college. Both Windows and macOS have their strengths—Windows offers broad software support, while macOS provides a seamless experience within Apple’s ecosystem. Consider what tools and programs you’ll need most, and see which platform fits best with your studies.

What software is required? For Mac users, most tasks are manageable via a virtual machine or bootcamp on a MacBook. A school computer works too, and you can opt for a Windows laptop only when necessary. Just try bootcamp on your MacBook.

Macs aren't the best choice when you need powerful performance for your work. The hardware you're getting isn't up to par compared to similar options on a budget, especially for demanding tasks. In projects where cost matters, other operating systems or even bare laptops might run faster and more efficiently.

I’d choose an affordable Windows laptop and some free programs. Focus on something that works for the short term in school. It’s okay if you lose it, lose money, or have it taken — a $1200 Mac isn’t worth it. Keep backups, just in case.
