Google Chrome isn't a typical browser, though it works well for certain chats. For other messaging apps, you might need alternatives like Yakyak, but it doesn't support them.

I'm not focusing on game chats, so it's not a major concern for me. We all switched to Skype around 2009/2010. At that time, we were using iChat and Aim (though I wish there was a client with the same features). Hangouts is mainly for work now.
