There are tools available that can automatically power down or put the computer to sleep after certain tasks finish, such as downloads or antivirus scans.
There are some programs such as autohotkey or eventghost for Windows, but I haven't tried them because the basic power management is sufficient for my requirements, like setting the screen to turn off after 10 minutes, hard drive after 15 minutes, and the computer to sleep after 30 minutes.
