I'm working with an HP Omen 15-ek0013dx laptop that has two SODIMM slots, currently equipped with an 8GB RAM configuration. The device functions well overall, but it tends to overheat—reaching around 90°C during intensive AAA gameplay. This likely contributed to the problem. I've been using this machine for 2 to 2.5 years when the issue started. One day, the system froze during normal tasks like browsing or casual use. I noticed the freezing mostly occurred when moving the laptop or pressing the keyboard keys firmly. Initially, I dismissed it and ignored the symptoms. Eventually, the computer failed to boot completely, emitting three long and two short white lights on the Caps Lock area. Upon inspection, it became clear the problem was related to RAM. The second SODIMM slot was empty and operated normally, but inserting any RAM into it caused memory errors and prevented startup. I used a different RAM module from another laptop; its specifications differed, yet it worked perfectly in the first slot. After cleaning dust from the fans, booting with both RAMs loaded still resulted in freezing when the laptop was moved, followed by a shutdown after some time. During this process, I reset the CMOS settings, which didn’t resolve the matter. I consulted IFixit forums and discovered that the RAM modules likely connect directly to the motherboard chipset rather than through a separate controller IC (refer to diagrams on pages 1 and 4). This suggests limited access to the chipset pins for testing. I attempted cleaning the slots, double-checked connections, and even looked at schematics online. In the process, I found a comment indicating the RAM stick layout might be incorrect—checking the block diagram could help. I suspect the issue lies elsewhere, possibly involving the CPU’s memory management chip. I’m unsure where exactly the fault resides. I can still run the laptop with one stick of RAM, though it may experience occasional lag, likely due to high load and only 8GB of memory. Currently, it operates in single-channel mode. Could there be a way to enable dual-channel with a 16GB stick? Would that significantly improve performance for development or casual use? I don’t plan to use this machine for gaming anymore.
