I'm struggling to locate boards that match the PCI Express X16 slot and CPU socket 478. I found one, but it's not well-known. Do anyone have suggestions?

The ASUS P4GD1 is a socket 478 with PCI-E, but it wasn't very stable—just used it for four months before it failed completely and ended up in the trash. 🤢
But I'm not sure if you're planning to change it. My friend did it for me, so maybe that's why.

You're probably thinking it's because after installing a PCI-E video card, the CPU wouldn't have enough power to run it properly, so you'd need to upgrade to an AGP card and then a new motherboard or power supply later.

What are you referring to? P4 3.2E performs just as well as a P4 540 or the S775 version of 3.2E. There isn't any card that is quick enough to benefit from AGP8x, let alone PCIe x16. Because neither the CPU socket type nor the card interface is restricting performance, we're still facing the issue that all CPUs are "too slow" and all graphics cards are "a limiting factor."

I own the Biostar board. It isn't an overclocker—it only reached 3.0 to 3.3Ghz—but it works fine and is reliable enough. I've been using it for 3-4 months as a BOINC and Folding@home machine with 8600GTS.

In 2017 there are still four S478 boards requiring GPUs, along with extra CPUs for them. Finding standard PCI GPUs is becoming increasingly difficult, and my 8400GS has already suffered damage from a desoldered memory chip and several blown capacitors.
