Actually, I have a question. I downloaded the Steam demo (or the free-to-play version up to level 20) and made a character, specifically a werewolf in this case. So far, everything seems fine, but the game then suddenly moved into the middle of a small city, with a human battling a werewolf attack. What happened? Where is my werewolf, and why couldn’t I leave the town?

You crafted a Worgen and are currently in Gilneas (the initial area). You must finish all the introductory missions... A Worgen begins as a human and can transform into one whenever desired. Once you complete the early tasks, it will become obvious who your character is.

Gotcha.
Not what I initially thought for WoW (I don't like fetch quests), but now I understand.
I was aiming to explore the world freely and do whatever caught my interest.

You can simply pursue the solo missions.  WoW doesn't really push content at you.  However, mmo fetch tasks aren't particularly thrilling.  You'll improve your equipment through multiplayer activities like dungeons and raids.
