So a friend of mine keeps urging me to join her in playing WoW.
The issue is, I don't enjoy online games with strangers (for many reasons unrelated to this discussion), but the WoW universe feels really appealing.
Therefore, I realize I might miss out on something if I create my own private server, aside from interacting with others.
Also, do you know of any recent tutorials on setting up a private me-only WoW server? The ones I've found seem outdated or old.

You can always join the starter edition to test the game without revealing your identity (if that's what you're concerned about). I think the value of WoW gets lost if you only play with NPCs on a private server—it wouldn't have the same community and experience as in a full WoW environment.

I don't enjoy interacting with others due to the common habit of rude behavior online, and I've grown tired of that with Diablo 1's battle.net servers in the past

Creating a pserver for yourself is essentially a waste of time and will likely contain bugs if you aim for an "up to date" version. It's far more beneficial to play another single-player RPG at that stage. The current World of Warcraft version is primarily designed as a single-player experience, so you're in a good position. You won't need to interact with others to obtain quality items.

Joining a private server alone doesn't really matter much. You'll just be limited to completing quests. If that's all you want, you can also do the same on live servers without needing to interact with others.

There are additional possibilities beyond fetch-quests on a live server. You might also explore other activities and content available during the session.

90% of the code is here.
Try playing on an existing private server for free. You can invite her to a “party” and you both can play together in your group.
Other players won’t really interfere with you. Maybe the boss you’re trying to kill just died, so wait a minute or two before it respawns.

Hello,
I wanted to comment on this because I'm very passionate about WoW and also very solo-minded.
Let me tell you, WoW now is
not
in a good place. The current patch is just plain horrible. But the good news is, Classic WoW will release very soon. and WoW can be played very solo-minded. You won't get as far alone, but that's not a big problem. I personally like to make money reselling items in the auction house and just questing it up for interesting items and soloing bosses on my Mage or Hunter.
If you'd like a more broad answer feel free to ask. Simple advice: Just lay back, there are no ''must do's'' in WoW Classic. This is partially why the game is so great! Just sit back and enjoy.
