Small files process quickly They move in just a few seconds Efficiency is improved with minimal size
Hello, I have a strange problem. I frequently transfer small files (1-2MB) around my PC, and sometimes they take an unusually long time. Not just copying or moving them—just relocating them. My machine is an HP laptop with an i5 1135g7, 8GB RAM, and a 512GB SK Hynix NVMe SSD. The task: a scanner sends files to the computer after scanning into a default folder. Then I move those files to their final location. I usually scan one file at a time. The issue is that occasionally, moving a file can take up to 30 seconds. At first, it moves quickly as expected. After a few scans, it starts slowing down—several seconds per file. Then it takes 15 to 30 seconds. The process seems to stop completely for about 30 seconds before finishing. It happens randomly, and I can’t reproduce it consistently. Sometimes I scan 20 files in a row and everything moves instantly. I’ve considered CPU usage and SSD activity are low, but the scanner itself might be the culprit. It also seems to occur when RAM is near full (around 80-85% usage). I’m thinking about upgrading my RAM or swapping in a better SSD for smoother performance.
I'm not confident about verifying it, but every file is located on the machine itself, not elsewhere in the network.
It suggests checking for slow shares in File Explorer, possibly involving network drives. You might use tools like netstat or Wireshark to identify such activity. The idea is to disable LAN connections for the process, which could trigger an immediate timeout if correct.
