Hello, I’m near a Micro Center and wanted to refresh my PC. My system is about eight years old with only a few components, so I thought buying a bundle for the motherboard, CPU, and RAM would be the easiest way. I’m unsure if it’s worth it, but I have a GTX 1080 that still performs well. The main concern is picking the right bundle to get the best value and whether upgrading the motherboard in the bundle makes sense.
Moving away from Intel packages, AMD is delivering stronger results and better efficiency... Depending on your budget, consider the 7700X bundle for $349 or the 9800X3D for $649 with the X870E chipset. Lower-end models start at just 16GB RAM. The 9700X offers more value than the 7700X, while the 9800X3D is slightly more expensive mainly because of the improved cache, allowing better overclocking and cooling. I’d favor a B850 board with PCIe Gen 5, but Gen 4 performance remains solid with a new card—especially if you plan to upgrade later. Ideally, prioritize a CPU like the B850 and allocate funds to a better GPU. This setup often provides a stronger overall balance than a top-end CPU paired with a 1080 resolution. Ultimately, it comes down to your budget. Note: The 1080Ti is still a solid choice right now, not the 1080.
Clear strategy. It really hinges on what you anticipate from the experience. Your choice of titles, screen size, and performance goals matter. I wouldn't agree, but I also hope to run cutting-edge AAA titles in 4K at over 100 frames per second. A GTX 1080 won’t be enough for that.
If your motherboard is compatible and hasn’t been limited by outdated BIOS, you might consider switching to a Ryzen 5 5600 for $132. Then you could allocate the rest of your budget toward a graphics card upgrade. The R5 5600 provides significantly better gaming performance compared to your R7 1700X. An RX 9060 XT with 16GB would double the VRAM and speed of your existing card, supporting modern upscaling and RT features for games that need it, priced at $370. Together, a CPU and GPU upgrade could deliver roughly double the performance, depending on the titles, for a total investment around $500.
