Slower internet connections are becoming more common.
I assembled a new computer and upon startup it takes roughly ten seconds to display the BIOS screen. Once in Windows everything functions properly. On speedtest.net I consistently achieve around 900 Mbps download and 38 Mbps upload, matching my bill. Downloading files from sites like Deskscapes for a theme desktop can take 1 to 2 minutes. On my previous machine the downloads were much faster. I reinstalled Windows 11 because during the first setup attempts files would either download or fail with an error about missing functionality. I was prompted repeatedly to save downloads to the correct folder, and speeds remained slow there too. My motherboard has the specifications listed: a Gigabyte Z790 motherboard, two M.2 drives (WD Black 1TB SNAP STX 850X) and another 2TB drive. I also have 128GB Corsair Dominator Vengeance RGB 5200 MHz C40 Platinum RAM, an Intel Core i9 13900K processor, a NXT Kraken X73 liquid cooler, and a GeForce 4090 OC with a NXT 1000W PSU. I left the BIOS settings unchanged, unsure if adjustments were needed for M.2 drives or Windows 11. I’m also using a USB connection and removed account requirements from my setup. The PC runs games smoothly, downloads files at an acceptable rate, streams well with occasional minor lag, and transfers data between drives efficiently. I’m uncertain about the issues and would appreciate any guidance.
First, install the newest BIOS update. Ensure XMP is activated. These steps won’t influence your internet performance. You didn’t specify the exact motherboard model. Did you set up the correct network drivers for your board? If not, reinstall them and restart the system. Your previous hardware might have had a superior network card—consider replacing it with a 1000 Gbit or higher option. Also inspect the connections: faulty or undersized cables, or overly long ones, could be the issue. Test by swapping them. For wireless setups, placement matters greatly; different boards may feature varying chip quality.
