Slots on the motherboard
The idea that RAM slots 1 and 3 are better than 2 and 4 is a common belief, but it's not supported by technical facts. Each slot type has its own role in the system.
They all look identical, but what's important is when your CPU cooler is too large and occupies the first slot, leaving only slots 2 and 4 available. Based on your motherboard, combinations like 1+3 or 2+4 might work for dual-channel setups. Some boards allow 1+2 or 3+4, so double-check the placement. Also, they come in pairs with specific color coding.
Based on how the traces are positioned, it matters whether they connect in pairs or go directly. If they split between slots, it doesn't matter. But if you route from slot 1 to slot 2, use slot 2. This is because the signal reflects at the end of the trace, and if the unused slot is too far away, it can cause interference.
Consider purchasing four sticks and restocking everything. It also appears to be a much better option.
I prefer to upgrade later, which is why I usually don’t start this at first. Often I reach the maximum by the end of my system’s usage period
