Skyrim Newbie Advice
You're eager to dive into Skyrim SE after a brief session on the vanilla 360 version. Your experience suggests you're ready for a mix of combat styles and have some preferences in mind. Since you're drawn to melee, archery, and magic, here are some suggestions:
- **Melee**: If you enjoy close combat and swordplay, consider starting with a character like **Dwarf Warrior** or **Orc Warrior** for a strong foundation.
- **Bow**: For archery, try **Ranger** or **Elf Archers**—they excel at ranged combat and fit your interest in mastering skills.
- **Magic**: If you're intrigued by spellcasting, **Wizard** or **Elf Mage** would be great choices.
- **Fire/Shock/Ice**: These classes are versatile and can suit different playstyles. **Ranger** with Fire or **Wizard** with Ice are popular options.
- **Stealthy Killer**: If you're into stealth, **Thief** or **Assassin** could be a good fit.
Since you're starting fresh, pick a class that matches your comfort zone and enjoy exploring every corner of the game. Have fun and happy adventuring!
Skyrim offers a different experience compared to the classic Elder Scrolls titles. You choose a race with some special advantages—like argonians breathing underwater—but enchanted items can reduce the value of those perks. You might find a master archer orc who excels at both two-handed weapons and magic, plus conjuring spells. He’s also a skilled craftsman. The variety keeps the game engaging, though it can feel a bit limited in depth. I prefer swordplay over magic and favor orcs and redguards. Orcs easily access strongholds, while nords face more criticism but aren’t overly challenging. Women tend to be smaller, making them slightly slower in combat. Overall, swordplay shines here, while magic remains less central. Personally, I enjoy the combat more and still need a sword. Maybe I just struggle with it.
Altmer for magic, Redguard/Nord for sword, Khajiit for stealth. In Skyrim there isn't much focus on planning a character's skill tree. After some gameplay, the race becomes less important, at least from a gameplay perspective.
@chckovsky Race choice isn't about winning—it's about strategy. What matters is how each race fits your playstyle beyond their stats. I’m leaning toward the High Elf for magic, the Argonian for style and health, the Khajiit for stealth, the Imperial for resources, the Nord for cold resistance, and I’m sticking with swordplay. Each has its perks, but it’s all about what feels right for you.
It seems you're a stealthy archer from Khajit. I love using the bound weapons and staying hidden. The silent casting perk on the bow and dagger makes for a thrilling experience.
This is the race I've been considering most. It stands out because it offers a special ability you can use as many times each day. It's one of the few races with a tail. I'm curious about how effective its night vision is in low light. The Khajiit reminds me of Blinx or Puss in Boots. What are bound weapons and the easiest way to get them? How challenging is it to obtain the silent casting perk? It seems like a really enjoyable experience.
EDIT: I picked the Khajiit and played for about two hours straight. When I reached the caves just before heading into Skyrim, I was instantly hooked. By the time I spoke to Alvor at Whiterun (I think that's where I am), I had collected 490 items. It took a long time to reach this point, moving at roughly one mile per hour. I traded many items I gathered along the way. Can't wait to play again tomorrow. I'm really into the story. I had no idea it could be so great.
Bound Weapons are conjuration spells of different levels, including dagger, bow, battle-axe, and sword. They function like daedric weapons but are cast before combat, so they don’t slow you down. Quiet casting is a level 50 illusion spell that lets you cast spells silently, yet it lets you use your bound weapon stealthily without being detected. This gives you a sneaky assassin-style spellcasting approach. Bound Bow is the most common one and can be found in Fort Amol. Bound Dagger is available from a character in Tel Mithryn during the Dragonborn expansion, which is later. Bound Sword and Battle Axe are typically bought at the College of Winterhold or from any major Court Wizard in large cities. If you’re interested now, keep an eye on mods.
Suggest making adjustments to fit your preferences. Nexus offers many mods that improve gameplay.
Stealth offers flexibility and strong performance when you know what you're doing. Seizing an enemy gives your attacks a boost in damage. At higher ranks this becomes powerful enough to take out most enemies quickly. They tend to be scattered, making it easy to eliminate them individually. It seems the mechanic might still be active, though I’m not certain about recent changes. I think you could level up Sneak simply by stepping into a wall with someone nearby.
