I reviewed every video gopher posted about the topic and finished cleaning all DLCs and update files. Now, because I had to open both the file I wanted to clean as well as skyrim.esm and update.esm, I’m curious about the process for cleaning mods. Should I interact with other mods, or does TES5edit automatically detect dependencies between them? Thanks!

I usually avoid cleaning particular mods unless told otherwise by the creator or the community. Some mods have questionable changes, but fixing them ruins the experience. I mainly focus on cleaning the core game, updates, and DLCs, which is why my game runs smoothly even with over 300 mods installed.

lucky mofo, I've got some shit going on in dawnstar, I cannot enter Dawnstar cell at all, I need to get in with COC. Then when I'm in if I want to get out I need to COC again, otherwise the game crashes again.

It looks like the file is corrupted. Would you like to start with a fresh save? Having many mods installed and removed in one session can cause serious issues. Usually, only texture and mesh changes are safe to upgrade or modify in a single save.

Back then, it was clear Dawnstars wasn't doing well—I had very few mods installed. Now I have a lot of them.

I recently took out the frostfall settings, so it hasn't been an issue lately. That suggests frostfall is likely very frequent in scripts and plugins, yes?

It's true; deleting it could have caused some unexpected effects. Consider using the save game script cleaner at http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/52363/. If that fails, you may have to discard the save file. However, if you wish to preserve your character's memory, try Familiar Faces at http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/54509/.

It looks like my problems with dawnstar—constant freezing and needing to restart—are fixed, just like my 15-minute crash issue. I've played around five hours today and managed a single CTD, which is really good.

Check the tes5Edit nexus videos and valuable tesedit advice on the merge plugin page. Some issues should be fixed regardless of whether the mod requires heavy changes, as they can damage your game or are poor practices. Cleaning now probably won’t solve your current character problem. Have you moved elsewhere in Skyrim (perhaps to a remote cell) and tried waiting 30 in-game days? Occasionally a reset is all you need—it’s helped me several times. I usually browse Tesedit, then use the "apply filter for cleaning" option and decide which issues to retain or which records to remove.
