I'm not aware of any OS dependencies related to overclocking, except possibly certain BSODs in Windows when the OC isn't reliable enough. Since real overclocking is handled in the BIOS, you don't really need an OS for that.

I understand but I've heard that Intel releases microcode updates via Windows Update on Windows 10, which could trigger a BSOD when attempting to overclock a non-K Skylake CPU.

I'm uncertain about altering microcode via BIOS or UEFI, as it's unclear whether these methods are viable options.
