Since MSI and ASRocks Z170 boards don't support non "k" overclocking, what are my options for increasing performance? I should check if updating the BIOS resolves this issue and whether a standard overclock will function properly.

The B clock needs to be increased, I think. The standard multiplier remains constant, so the base clock speed must be raised—usually from 100MHz.
