So my friend decided to buy a budget PC. He chose an X4 880K and a decent motherboard, but then he got offered the Asrock Z170 Pro4 LGA1151 at a very low price. Now he's stuck between the G4400 and the future X4 880K. Which one should he pick? And which processor performs better after OC? P.S.: Sorry for the poor English.

For gaming, the G4400 falls short. A basic i3 is the bare essential for modern titles. Instead of a G4400 and Z170 board, opt for an i3-6100 and B150 board.

Also, the G4400 isn't unlocked, so it's not overcloakable. Save money on the motherboard and consider an i3 as suggested by bicycle_repair_man

G4400 is a dual-thread chip, but many games now require four threads for smooth performance. Right now, the top budget option is the i3 6100, and you won't need a Z170 motherboard. A more affordable H110 or B150 chipset should suffice.

If the Z170 motherboard is affordable, I would begin with that one.
Asrock offered a feature named sky OC which enabled BCLK overclocking for non-K chips.
Intel opposed this, so the enabling BIOS was removed but remains accessible.
Even without overclocking, the G4400 appears to be a stronger choice for gaming.
Below is a comparison from several games.

What matters most is the potential for future upgrades.
There are no suitable CPU upgrades for the motherboards that support an X4-880K.
However, there are many beneficial upgrades for Z170-based boards.
Also, think about the advantages of an I3-6100.
Here is a comparison that includes tests with FX and X4-850 processors.
It seems single-thread performance is the key factor.
