Simracing (ACC) and CPUs
Hey everyone, I just switched from a GTX 1070 to an RTX 4070ti. I'm still using an AMD 3700x with it and a 1440p monitor at 144Hz. Over the past couple of years I've been into sim racing, mostly doing ACC. After the upgrade, I noticed my frame rates dropped to around 70-90fps on ultra settings. At first I didn’t think much of it. Last week I ran an endurance race and suddenly got multiple stutters and warnings saying "CPU usage 99%" – it was so slow I couldn’t finish. Initially I thought maybe a software glitch, but then I started digging. I found it’s hard to say for sure whether my 3700x could handle the workload, especially at lower settings. I was hoping to compare it with the 5800X3d, which I’m considering upgrading to. It’s huge – 2-3 times better performance! I’m really curious if anyone else has faced similar issues or if this was just a software problem. I haven’t tried to recreate the problem yet, but I’ve never had such trouble before. Do you think my endurance lap was due to something else or a bug? Or is my CPU about to need replacing?
I needed to upgrade my 9900k when I got the 4080 since it had many stutters and below average FPS for the 4080. The experience was awful with very low 1% and microstutters. Once I upgraded to a 7700x, everything improved! 5800X3D will definitely give the 4070ti more room to breathe.
It's fascinating to reflect on those days with Sandy-Bridge. I never considered the CPU as a limitation until then. My i5 2500k kept me running for at least five years before upgrades became necessary. Now my two-and-a-half-year-old CPU is seriously restricting performance. It's remarkable how much progress has been made in CPU technology over the past few years.
