He enjoys Minecraft and Roblox, spending a lot of time on his iPad, but he really wants to play with me. I set it up on my PC with 4K OptiFine shaders and around 60 to 80 FPS... that’s fine. Now he’s using my old extra laptop, an Alienware R17 1070 with 32GB RAM and a 6-core CPU, but only for a few sessions. I’d like him to have his own desktop soon—something practical. For 1080P and shaders, even though he doesn’t mind graphics, I’m trying to decide which GPU to choose. Considering a 2500K or higher with at least four cores and 8GB RAM, I checked the 3400G Vega, but it’s an APU and much cheaper to buy used. Would a 1060 6GB be too much? Since it’s heavily advertised with 1060 6GB and RX580 cards are available now, the 580 cards are actually pricier. Even the 970 series is quite expensive—similar to what I sold two 970 Strix cards for when I bought my new 1080Ti long ago.

a 1050 should be enough for roblox and minecraft, though some shaders need a lot of gpu power.

For Minecraft you just need a dedicated GPU that isn't Intel integrated, connected via a PCI-E 16x slot (that actually counts). Do you have anything similar on the shelf that isn't from 8 years ago?

For the cost, a used RX580 with 8gb is the best value for budget 1080p. Roblox and Minecraft, even a RX560 or 1030 works fine. If you think 3400g is sufficient, performance matches that of a 1030.

well the 3400g was scrapped after I noticed shader performance issues... and it would be nice when he tries other things that might work... but i just don’t want to give him whatever he wants, so it’s okay—it’s not a perfect system.
