You're looking for a beginner-friendly Linux distribution with a modern, attractive design. It should be visually appealing and suitable for programming tasks on a laptop.

Ubuntu or Debian? It comes down to the style you prefer and what appeals to you.

xubuntu offers a distinct experience compared to Windows, avoiding the need to immediately feel comfortable. It balances clarity with familiarity, remains highly efficient, and minimizes overwhelming information by focusing on essential topics.

The version I prefer the most is Fedora 26, especially because of its package management and repositories. Almost everything that comes with Gnome 3 looks great on it (Fedora, Ubuntu perhaps). I’ve also observed that Fedora tends to be more lightweight. CentOS is another option, though it doesn’t have the same aesthetic appeal with its default setup.

Obtain the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS edition. This stable release maintains consistent updates and offers extended support for security patches. Download the ISO file using the torrent version, as torrents include built-in verification to prevent common installation issues.

Have you explored Debian 9? It seems to be quite problematic.

It varies based on what you need from an operating system, but 9 is quite poor.

I wasn't satisfied with how the gnome they provided was implemented. I tested it on two different machines, but launching and using Gnome felt very slow. The performance was completely unacceptable.
