But I’m having trouble getting a mobile plan since the only options are AT&T and Verizon, and even their home internet isn’t good enough to justify the cost.

If you reside in a remote location, you realize you won’t receive reliable connectivity. That’s why I’d rather never settle for such a situation. Since beyond 3 Mbps DSL, satellite internet, or very restricted LTE coverage there are no alternatives, it’s not a viable choice.

It’s still quite low, only 0.5 Mbps, and the speed isn’t useful for streaming or browsing. Buying a laptop seems out of reach at the moment.

Unfortunately, there are limited choices available. The situation stems from US policies and operational methods. Besides relocation, consider a hotspot plan, though data limits will be an issue. My supervisor uses Verizon and reportedly receives 6 Gbps monthly. This seems to be your main viable path. AT&T and Verizon don’t provide fixed wireless services. The alternative is checking for nearby WISP providers that offer fixed wireless. Outside those options, rural living presents challenges—land is scarce, internet access is rare in cities, and services like Starlink come with high costs and limited availability.

I checked Starlink, but I can't access the beta due to availability and location issues. Once it launches, I should be able to join, but for now I'm just working around it.
