I’m a video editor and an avid gamer. Recently, my gaming experience has taken a hit. My laptop can handle Fortnite better than my PC right now. At medium settings, it drops from around 200 FPS to over 30, causing stuttering and freezing effects. Even lowering the settings makes things worse. I’ve checked CPU usage with Capframex and Task Manager, but it’s using nearly all the processor while GPU usage stays low. Switching to high settings improved GPU reliance a bit, but FPS stayed around 40-50.
I suspect this is specific to Fortnite or Valorant, as those games run smoothly at lower settings. Call of Duty Cold War behaves similarly after a few multiplayer sessions. RE Remakes also shows the same CPU bottleneck issue, especially at low settings.
My PC was built in 2019 with an older GPU that failed about six months ago. I upgraded to the GeForce RTX 3080 and added an SSD around two years later. Despite changes, performance remains inconsistent. I’ve tried BIOS tweaks, XMP profiles, disabling peripherals, safe mode, driver updates, and even reinstalling drivers—nothing fixed it.
Some signs point to a power supply unit (PSU) problem, as the system slowed down when more than one external drive was connected. It’s also possible the CPU is struggling, but the GPU seems to be limiting performance. I’m unsure which factor is the main culprit. Any advice or steps you could suggest would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using a 1440p screen and also tried boosting the resolution with nvdia, but the improvement wasn't noticeable. Maybe I'll reinstall Windows tomorrow to check if it makes a difference.
