Good morning everyone, I'm struggling a bit with this situation. I've been playing DayZ and consistently seeing huge FPS drops from 200 to 100-120. Even when I lower the settings, it actually makes things worse. The same happens with GTA5—when settings aren't maxed out, the game becomes unplayable but still has those annoying spikes and drops. Recently, I switched to a 34” OLED at 240Hz and 4090, which worked perfectly with my 14700k and 3080 combo on a 165Hz 32” monitor. I have 6000mt Trident RAM and the CPU runs smoothly at 5.5GHz. Can anyone offer some advice?

Are there any recurring trends in FPS drops over time? Do they occur after a specific period or within certain map sections? Are you collecting technical metrics during troubleshooting—such as using HWMonPro to monitor thermal, power, or overall CPU/GPU usage? Have other components changed besides the CPU (14700→14900) and GPU (RTX3080→RTX4090)? For example, if you swapped RAM, did you apply the new XMP profile? Just because the headline CL rating matches doesn’t guarantee identical timing performance.

I haven’t logged much except watching Afterburner. Dayz seems to be running nonstop, and my friends think I’m lagging—maybe because of their connection issues. Even with maximum or minimum settings, I’m using only 60-80% of my GPU power, which should be typical for a 3440x1440 display. In GTA V, if graphics aren’t pushed hard, the same issues appear, just less intense. Sea of Thieves struggles most at night or during battles, but I thought that was due to server problems. Low-end games still manage, and it feels like the GPU isn’t getting enough use. After updating BIOS, all profiles reset, but the problem continued before that (with or without XMP). The only changes I made were to the monitor and GPU settings; everything else stayed the same. Someone on Reddit suggested DDU or reinstalling Windows, but I have thousands of GB in games and don’t want to risk reinstalling the OS.

There's a huge difference between lag and fps drops. You've been very specific that this is fps, so I'll keep targeting that, but be careful with DayZ as some servers indicated v low ping, but are actually US-based and can be quite laggy, despite DZSA making it look like they're running on your local LAN! Back onto the "fps drops": I would really recommend that you run something like HWMonPro on a 2nd screen, so you can check on thermals and power draw exactly when you get the issues (or running background logging, if you don't have a 2nd screen). Given you reluctance to re-install Windows, did you do a re-install when you changed the CPU? To be clear: I don't know anything about moving from an i7 to i9, but I assume that a full re-install is required as the Windows scheduler will have identified the P-cores and E-core on install... and given the way that Intel splice the E-cores ID's in-between the P-core ID's, you will probably now have Core Id's that were previously P-cores and are now E-cores that you're trying to game on. I don't know if there's any way to force Windows to re-analyse and re-allocate the core types for each CPU ID. Have you got a spare drive? (regardless of performance / capcity) If you have, you could test out a Windows re-install - just Windows and a game of choice, maybe even a Vanilla server so you don't have to grind through several hundred Gb of mods (which is what I have for DayZ!). If you haven't, then a 1Tb M.2 for £50 might be a worthwhile investment? Remove ALL the other storage.... set it up with the one new drive and try a clean build - it will HALVE the number of scenarios that you have: right now you don't know WHERE it is as it could be anything from hardware (faulty component / bad power delivery / cooling) or software (Windows scheduler picking the wrong core / bad nVidia driver install).

The situation seems unclear to me, but I didn<|pad|>'s never upgraded to the i9. It’s still the same CPU I had with the 3080. I removed it to inspect the pins and it was recognized as a new CPU, yet it was actually the same one. I have four separate M.2 drives. I wasn’t aware I could keep everything while just reinstalling to one drive on the OS. My CPU stays below 70°C during gaming, usually around 50°C, and the GPU rarely hits that level. When I run tests in 3DMark and Cinebench, everything appears normal, but games drop 40–100 frames and don’t stay stable.

Great news, no thermal throttling detected. However, it seems your GPU might not be receiving enough data or could be a different model like the RTX4090. Typical idle temperatures range from 35°C to 50°C, while gaming temps stay between 60°C and 70°C.
