Occasionally during gameplay my screen freezes or loses connection with the GPU. Still, audio continues and I can operate media controls like stopping or restarting music. Keyboard responses remain active when pressed. Only after attempting to reinstall the graphics driver (Win + Ctrl + Shift + B) does it completely crash. After a short wait (30 seconds to a minute), this occurs again. This has started recently, and my PC had no issues before. The problem appears random, happening within about 10 minutes of launching a game. It never happens more than once. If it hasn’t happened yet, I can play freely, close or open games without issues. After a crash, there are occasional random failures shortly after startup, but not while using the PC normally. Sometimes the VGA LED stays on during boot and remains inactive—no power cycling involved. Only after a crash does this happen. Recently played titles include Repo, Rocket League, and Raft. Repo being lightweight rules out performance problems. Rocket League seems affected more due to frame limits, though overheating isn’t an issue. EventViewer shows no errors except for some GameInputServices issues I briefly resolved, which didn’t stop the crashes. It also reports it can’t locate a service named btwdins—a detail I recall from long ago and never encountered before. The internet agrees on this. I’ve tried removing overclocks (except XMP), clearing CMOS, cleaning dust, ensuring cables are secure, reinstalling the driver (including using DDU), switching to Studio instead of Game-Ready Drivers, launching games without mods, running CMD commands (sfc /scannow, DISM), and even reinstalling the graphics card. I also used a different installer and tried a clean Windows setup. My system is an Intel Core i7-9700F with an NVIDIA RTX 3070 (MSI Ventus X3) 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB @3200MHz, paired with a beQuiet Power 9 (700W). It runs Windows 10 Pro. I’m really seeking advice since I haven’t changed anything and the PC has worked well for about three years.

Yes, you can check other GPUs on your system or test them on another PC. The Event Viewer provides details about GPU performance and errors.

Include all possible troubleshooting actions. Possibility of failing RAM, GPU, or power supply. Consider a fresh Windows setup, though hardware problems seem likely. Try forcing a crash using Furmark or Prime95. Have you run MemTest?

Unfortunately no GPU is available for testing. The event viewer isn’t displaying useful information. I’m planning to run memtest tomorrow, and possibly furmark as well. I’ll let you know the results tomorrow. If something critical fails, it would be really disappointing. I should have noted that during my cleaning process I removed my RAM, which caused boot issues right away—those problems were present before. Should I consider updating my BIOS? It seems odd that it could start randomly triggering these issues, especially if it indicates a graphics card problem at startup. Also, I received a “wanna send a crash-report” from my NVIDIA driver once, but never again.

It's worth giving it a shot.

It's clear from your message that FurMark tends to crash frequently, which likely includes issues tied to DirectX12 as well.

It might stem from a faulty GPU BIOS. I’ve faced this before and had to change the card’s BIOS settings—it’s not something to ignore, as incorrect changes could damage your hardware. However, updating the BIOS resolved the problem for me.

It seems like you're preparing for some major system updates. I'll make sure to keep your instructions clear. BIOS update, memory testing with Memtest, and a full clean install of Windows are steps you should take. Since the computer has three main drives, expect the reinstallation to be time-consuming.

It looks like a solid idea! I'm confident it will resolve the issue. Let me know if you need anything elseSmile

BIOS update without XMP didn’t resolve the issue. Furmark ran for about 12 minutes without a crash at first, then restarted and experienced a crash while playing RL. After rebooting, the desktop crashed within a minute of launching any game. The Windows reinstall is scheduled for later, not today.
