Memory dimming levels should match the airflow pattern similar to the EVGA Z390 DARK (front-to-back channels). When using heavily overclocked RAM, it makes sense that a board would be built with this design for optimal performance. The two-dimming restriction here is common on boards targeted at extreme memory speeds. Has anyone verified whether this actually provides a measurable advantage?

There isn’t room to lay them side by side on the motherboard. The Z390 Dark is designed this way to enhance RAM overclocking performance.

The data remains accessible because it simplifies connecting the wires from the socket to the memory modules in that specific way (there are over 100 connections between the socket and RAM slots, arranged in pairs that need matching lengths). Rotating the socket becomes difficult since many traces also lead to PCIe slots. Premium motherboards offer greater flexibility by supporting more layers and routing through inner sections, providing better space for placement—though adding layers increases production costs. Still, the advantages of certain memory orientations are not significant enough to justify the extra expense.

I thought there had to be a solid explanation. Those small cooling units at the top of premium RAM modules seem completely out of place.

You often notice this feature on server workstations—it covers intake fans and spans memory slots. It’s unclear why it doesn’t appear more frequently on consumer boards.
