Shutdown occurs during evenings even when power-saving features remain active
Hey everyone. I just installed a new PC – my first one in ten years, so I’m a bit unfamiliar with things. Every evening it shuts down and I can’t get it back online unless I force it off or reset it. I turned off all power management settings in BIOS, adjusted Windows power plans, and checked the monitor setup menu, but nothing seems to work. My old 27-inch Samsung (S60UA) display worked fine before, so this is unusual. Since the monitor wasn’t an issue, I’m not sure why the new one behaves this way. Outside of that frustrating nightly loss, the PC runs perfectly. The new build includes: motherboard – Gigabyte Z790 Aero G, CPU – Intel i7 13700, GPU – AMD Radeon 7600XT, RAM – 32GB DDR5 5600mhz (Corsair Vengeance), main drive – Crucial P3 Plus 1TB, secondary drive – Crucial P3 Plus 4TB, power supply – THERMALTAKE Toughpower GF A3 850w, OS – Windows 11 Pro. I’m wondering if the built-in Intel GPU might be taking over at shutdown time, but I don’t know how to investigate further. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have a power-saving mode or screen saver enabled in Windows? If yes, disable it. Besides that, inspect your cables to ensure they're securely connected to both the PC and monitor. Verify there are no loose contacts. Also, look for any potential low-power issues in your home or area, and consider updating any available drivers.
Monitor was initially in a default configuration, but this problem only appeared after my purchase. The main change was switching from Thunderbolt to HDMI connection. After adjusting power settings in Windows and disabling power-saving features, I tried using a DP cable to investigate further. All drivers are fresh and up-to-date. Power supply issues haven’t occurred with any device, though it’s hard to confirm without the monitor present. I plan to spend some evenings testing with a camera setup to pinpoint when this happens consistently. It seems to occur mainly in the evening, but I’m never near the monitor during those times. When working on video editing or gaming, everything works fine. I’ll document the findings once I capture a reliable time and try to identify what triggers it.
Updated. Confirmed it's not related to cable problems or time of day. I tested the drivers, replaced everything, and left the system for about five hours—it "black screened" again. I connected the monitor to the Intel onboard GPU and the screen started working, but an error appeared: "AMD software detected a driver timeout." I looked into possible causes but found few reliable suggestions online. Most seem to point to conflicts with apps or programs running at the same time, like games or browsers. In this case, the PC was idle except for the system booting up. Other thoughts include: 1) USB-C connection to the monitor possibly causing a signal conflict; 2) using Spyder Express to calibrate the monitor for color accuracy in video editing; 3) a simple USB drawing pad that might be mapping itself to the display. Any other ideas?
I've managed to avoid any black screen issues lately. It looks like the USB C/Thunderbolt setup caused a conflict because the driver wasn't sure whether to send the signal through HDMI or USB. The cable still works fine when I'm idle, and it doesn't interfere with programs like Davinci Resolve, Affinity Photo, or Ready or Not.
