It saves your computer's current state in RAM, which is why it can quickly return to the lock screen.

It depends on the game. I enable sleep mode in Fallout 4 when I’m far from a save file and it’s late, so I can continue playing tomorrow and save later.

Hibernation puts the PC to sleep while keeping its current data in a saved file on the storage device. Occasionally, Windows might behave unexpectedly after a long period without restarting, so choosing to shut down directly helps prevent this problem.

Be careful not to assume that way! Hibernation offers a more suitable option for your bear compared to putting it to sleep.

It's hard to say exactly how much your PC is using power, but after dinner you often see it running for long periods. Watching TV episodes can take around 80 minutes each, and with dinner it might stretch to nearly two hours. This extended usage usually means your computer consumes a lot of energy.
