Should I upgrade my CPU?
I've been using my current CPU for three years and it's functioning well, though I'm open to boosting performance when rendering or gaming. My setup includes: CPU - Ryzen 7 2700, Mobo - B450M-A, RAM - Corsair LPX 3600mhz (currently 3000mhz), GPU - GTX 1080, Power Supply - Corsair TX650M. I've heard that 400 series boards can now support AM5 with BIOS updates, so I was considering upgrading to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Would this make a clear difference? Should I invest more and upgrade to a 7000 series with a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM?
You might experience CPU restrictions in games without reaching near 100% usage. I’d prefer GPU metrics instead. If your GPU usage stays under 96% during gameplay, a CPU cap likely isn’t the issue. The 5800X3D will definitely boost performance in large titles; though a 1080Ti won’t show it as much. Still, certain CPU-heavy games will still improve noticeably over time.
They should evaluate their main tasks—CPU rendering might suit a 5900X if the motherboard fits. For gaming, a 5800X3D could work better and is more compatible. If the focus is rendering, a 5900X might be excessive. Checking the specific model at the link can help decide.
Your CPU is a standard 2700, it runs smoothly. You mainly use software like After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator for games, plus modded Skyrim (with hundreds of mods), League of Legends, and CSGO. If it can't keep up with a 5900, upgrading to a 7000 series would be a good idea.
