Should I reuse an old PSU in a new installation?
Should I reuse an old PSU in a new installation?
Hello everyone, here’s what I’m working with for my latest computer setup:
CPU: Intel core i7 13700k
CPU Cooler: Deepcool ak620
Motherboard: Asus Prime z790-p Wifi ddr5 atx
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2x16) ddr5-6000
Storage: 2xWestern Digital black 7200rpm
Storage: samsung 970 evo nvme
Video Card: Gigabyte windforce oc geforce gtx 1060 3gb (from previous system)
Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow atx
I’m seeking advice on the PSU. My existing unit is a Corsair AX860 from 2016, it’s been running for seven years and its warranty has ended. I’m considering using it in this new build, but I’m worried it might cause damage if it fails. If I were to purchase a replacement, what would you recommend?
1. Is it safe to keep using my current PSU (Corsair AX860) for the new build? I just want it to last without harming other parts.
2. If I had to get a new PSU, which models do you suggest—HX1000i, HX1200, or RM1000x? I’m planning to upgrade to more power later and need something that can handle heavy loads.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Best practice suggests replacing the power supply, especially at this stage.
Your existing graphics card adds some benefit.
Try a couple of power supply calculators to assess the draw.
If the consumption is around half of the supply output, it should work in the short term.
However, using it poses risks with your new components.
I wouldn’t rely on it for long, and definitely not when upgrading to a new graphics card or high-power devices.
If it malfunctions, it might damage other equipment, making the cost of replacement a concern. Is this worth the expense?
The idea on this platform would be to suggest swapping out a 7-year-old power supply.
No one can predict when the current one will stop working or what might happen next.
"Safe" really depends on the situation.
It’s just a practical compromise between cost and worry.
I haven’t been keeping up recently, but I’m not sure about the RM series right now.
Unless you suspect a problem with your psu, I would plan on reusing it.
It is a quality unit and your wattage demands are modest when using a gtx1060.

I use the Corsair HX1000W Platinum rated model with my 7800X3D and Red Devil 7900XT. It has been in and out of various systems for about two to three years, never having any issues!
It's a larger power supply unit that can sometimes cause problems in smaller setups.
However, with your current PC specs, even if you upgrade to a 4090 tomorrow, the newer HX1000I Platinum rated model would still be sufficient!
