Should I return my laptop?
Should I return my laptop?
I own a new HP Envy X360 equipped with the 5500u chipset. I've been using it for roughly two months and still have a month before the return deadline. During this time, the laptop has experienced BSODs around ten times due to security check failures and resource ownership issues. It also crashed to power off three times last weekend, even when charged near 80% and once while plugged in.
I plan to contact HP about a warranty claim, but I'm leaning toward returning it because of the problems other users have reported—like hinge issues and crashes similar to what a friend experienced. The main concern is that the laptop fits my needs perfectly, it's within my budget, works well for stylus notes, and can handle Solidworks adequately.
I'm trying to decide whether to keep it or dispose of it before the deadline. Thanks for any advice.
Have you ensured that Windows and every installed program were refreshed throughout this process, encompassing drivers and laptop firmware?
I would request the laptop be returned because diagnosing it would require several hours to a few days to identify the issue. If it crashed suddenly, it likely shut down while under load or during idle time. I recommend using the serial number on the laptop and submitting it to HPO's support portal, checking the BIOS version listed there. You can also use CPU-Z to view the current BIOS version (under the Mainboard section). Please let me know the operating system you're using—Windows 10 or 11? If it's Windows 10, specify the edition.
BIOS is up to date (as well as drivers and OS), running Windows 11. By straight crash I mean during light use (OneNote). The laptop is relatively stable and I can stay in BIOS, but it crashes to BSOD every few days under light use.
I'll think I will definitely lean towards returning it, likely just as soon as this school semester is over so I can have time to switch over.
