I've been considering purchasing Rainbow Six Siege, though it's been available for two years. Many players are already familiar with it, so catching up might be necessary. Also, is it still popular among current gamers?

There's a cheaper version which doesn't have the majority of the characters but will give you an idea of the gameplay.

In Brazil, R6S remains popular, ranking among the most played titles on Steam worldwide. There are areas to improve, but progress moves at a steady pace, making it manageable to grasp everything. Avoid purchasing the Starter Edition—it's not a good value. All operators start at 25,000 Credits (typically only DLC creators charge that much). The regular version is slightly pricier but more accessible, with prices dropping to around 2,000 Credits for non-DLC operators.

Purchase now and make your choice. You're free to return it if you don't like it, but only if your playtime stays under two hours.

Enjoy the game and keep playing for as long as you like. Ignore what others think, because you're the one controlling the experience.
