I've been utilizing avg for some time. I changed to Avast but didn't like it, so I returned to avg which appears to work well again.

Windows Defender is ineffective; turn it off. Use Malwarebytes Premium instead.

If you’re going for a paid product, consider Bitdefender or Kaspersky. I’d probably choose Kaspersky because their team has uncovered many security vulnerabilities in the past. You might also explore AVTEST, an independent company that rates antivirus programs (Bitdefender and Kaspersky are the leading two).
