I’m thinking about using an R5 5600X paired with an ASUS ROG Strix B550.

Are you evaluating the B550-F as a premium option for advanced upgrades? Or is it the entry-level model? If it’s the latter, what higher-end board do you think opens more possibilities? Which upgrades are we considering? You should be aware that any AM4 platform reaches its limit since no further CPUs are expected unless AMD introduces additional 3D cache variants.

I understand, but it seems like the alternative options beyond AM4 (R5 5600X) aren't meeting my expectations for good performance at a mid-range price.

A 12th-gen Intel i5 paired with a solid B660 board can handle or surpass the 5600X, while also offering a route to improve with future Intel chips.

The AM4 platform is largely outdated. Boards with sufficient voltage regulators will work for upgrades if they’re worth moving from 5600x to 5900x around the next generation, or else they’re not worth it. ASUS chips are usually too expensive, so I wouldn’t suggest them. Especially avoid them for AM4 (500-series) because their memory architecture is problematic—getting speeds like 4400 is tough. Older AM4 and Intel boards don’t seem to have the same issues, so you shouldn’t worry much about them. But they’re still overpriced overall, so it’s best to skip them unless you find a good deal.
