Should a desktop power supply maintain a charge when the switch is off?
For instance, if I don't use the desktop pc for an extended time, I will normally shut it down and then switch off the power supply's switch located on the back of the unit. Later, I will restart the pc using the power button on the front of the case.
Occasionally, the system briefly powers on for about a second before shutting again. When I inspect the setup, I notice that I've missed turning the PSU switch back on each time. This has only happened a few times. Although I haven't confirmed whether the wall switch remains active during these instances (probably), it's always connected to the wall and the PSU switch stays off.
Could a PSU retain a short charge in this way? I'm using a rog 850w gold. My earlier pc's power supply never did this, and it had an Enermax 600w PSU (from the early 2000s). I think they might be of average quality, but it lasted around ten years. The new system with its rog PSU is only a couple of months old. This makes me wonder about the PSU's durability as well. Apart from that, it functions perfectly. Appreciate any advice.
If you were alive during the 70s, turning off a high-power amplifier while keeping the preamp active would cause the music to stop after roughly a minute before fading away. The same happens with the power supply on our PCs.
I wonder if this provides a clue about the quality of capacitors or power supplies compared to the older system with its different supply method. It’s hard to say for sure, but I still question why it doesn’t retain energy after being turned off. Maybe it simply needs time. Switching it off regularly could be harmful. I really missed the 70s!
