It depends on whether you prefer the Half-Life or Portal series more.

Orange Box. Portal will last like 3 hours at most. If you get HL2 there's a mod called HL2: Updated that severely updates the graphics.

I’d choose Portal because it’s way more enjoyable that way.

For puzzle enthusiasts, try Portal. If not, another option might suit you better. While I don’t really lean toward puzzle games, I found Portal’s challenges quite enjoyable.

Portal and Half life's "lore" are very much interconnected but you don't absolutely need to play one to enjoy the other. Since Half life is incomplete and unlikely to ever be complete, just get Portal + Portal 2. The games are amazing. Even more so if you have a friend to play Portal 2 with later after you're done with the single player campaign. That said, the Half life games are also amazing. (And isn't Team Fortress 2 free now?...)

The Portal series is amazing, I really liked playing through them. The conversations, storyline, and overall experience are excellent. While I think Portal 2 is superior, it's best to wait until you've completed the first game; otherwise, you might get confused.
