Sharepoint.exe appears to be consuming an unusually large share of CPU resources on my computer compared to my laptop, which uses 0%. The application is linked to files in OneDrive rather than being a standalone program. It’s unclear what triggers this behavior, as it began unexpectedly and didn’t become apparent after any updates. This issue arises randomly, sometimes when turning on the computer, other times when opening OneDrive or at random moments throughout the day. My workaround is closing the task in Task Manager, which resolves the problem for the rest of my session. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling different versions of OneDrive, clearing all related files, but nothing has worked. I’m seeking guidance from others.

Does this technique help you grasp the reason behind sudden heavy CPU activity and suggest ways to resolve it?

SharePoint is related to your PC and laptop in the context of its functionality or connectivity. Clarify whether it's an instance running locally or on a server you're linking to.

the SharePoint.exe is found and marked as an "Application" within OneDrive files in a folder named after the OneDrive version, such as 23.169.0813.0001, which represents the specific OneDrive version in use. It is consuming too much CPU power, leading to excessive fan rotation on my PC (it should not exceed 20% CPU usage). This problem does not affect my laptop, as it shares the same settings, updates, and OneDrive versions. Please let me know if you require additional information.

Do your systems connect to a corporate server? SP and OneDrive have some connection, but it's not like a standard home setup. Which operating system are you running?

They don't connect to a corporate server. My OneDrive is a personal account, not tied to any company system. My School account is used for other applications like Word and Excel under the subscription, though I've always managed that across all devices without this problem. It's also separate from my OneDrive app, and I don't use it for actual work but just to access the services. OS is Windows 11 as mentioned earlier.

Checking my WIn 11 Pro setup, yes...SharePoint functions as a part of OneDrive and likely Office365. That label is normal. Does this usage rate decrease over time?

I mean it refers to the fact that the label’s appearance remains normal and consistent, without any unusual behavior. It helps clarify that the issue isn’t related to abnormal changes but rather to fluctuations in the percentage value. This pattern can vary over time, sometimes staying within a certain range and occasionally shifting, which affects how it’s displayed. It’s also worth noting that the percentage doesn’t stabilize easily and tends to change depending on the device or conditions. This behavior could be connected to software updates, hardware compatibility, or other system changes.

"not abnormal" here refers to SharePoint, in this case, being a part of OneDrive. They use the same DLLs and libraries.
A shift from 5% to 10% might simply indicate OneDrive is syncing.
Not malware or any harmful activity.

But that's intriguing since I've monitored this and even when OneDrive isn't showing any visible sync (or has nothing to sync because I haven't done anything), it still consumes this percentage for 30 minutes. Plus, it never stops on my laptop. Would it be better to finish the task in Task Manager before it begins? (Thinking about the strain it puts on my PC, causing heat and slowdowns.)
