I spent some time adjusting the voltage on the CPU OC. At 5GHz I began at 1.35 volts and lowered it until I encountered a BSOD. I was able to run all benchmarks so far at 1.21 volts, which reduced the heat somewhat. I experienced a BSOD at 1.19 volts, so I increased it back to 1.21.
At 5.1GHz I raised it slightly to 1.23v and everything worked fine. The thermal performance was good for these short tests. I ran prime95 at 5.1GHz and the h115i struggled to stay cool, so I had to stop it after over 20 minutes. That’s acceptable for me since the AIO managed to keep things under control for at least a few benchmarks to check scores. After CPU performance, I’m most satisfied with my motherboard. Its OC capabilities are impressive—definitely the best board I’ve ever used.
MSI performance varies widely. Some boards are truly amazing, others fall short. My experience leans toward the average, but it was affordable. The 9900k struggles with coolers under 360mm for most overclocking attempts. My friend’s setup with a 9900k and H100i works just fine at stock, while the AIO helped his older I7 8700 that was limited by its built-in cooler.
Have you discussed investing in Noctua IPPC 3000rpm 110 cfm fans with your friend?
I don’t have any benchmarks or validations, as those weren’t available back then. My biggest achievement was overclocking an 8086 from an 8Mhz base to 12Mhz. For those who find the math challenging, that’s a 50% increase.
What stood out was the approach: unsolder the local oscillator, solder in a socket, and swap it with a new LO.
The memory reacted poorly, so I had to remove all the DRAM DIPs and install faster ones. It functioned well—luckily I had a small supply of 10ns DRAM for the job. The Seagate 5MB Winchester disk on the ST506 MFM controller performed just fine, and the Paradise VGA card also handled it without issue.
I owned an FX-4100 that refused to be shut down no matter the voltage applied, and it continued to increase in frequency. It was a powerful machine and my top-tier air overlocker.

I also had this locked i5 still running at 176% overclock with great low latency DDR3.

It's a regret that it didn't end there, since then you'd have had a reason to improve sooner.
I really don't like foreign exchange.
Yeah, not flashy or cheap at all but
They really perform well with my three coolers.
Curious if Noctua will release an RGB line that matches the Ippc's quality for those who prefer RGB.
Also, I'm considering selling my Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 and the 16GB 2x8 G.G.skill Trident X DDR3 1866 CL10.
