I currently use several monitors connected to my system. I was a bit let down by what Windows offers out-of-the-box. I searched online for alternatives and discovered Display Fusion, which Luke reviewed positively. Unfortunately, the free version doesn’t quite match the pro features, so I’m curious if anyone else knows of any complimentary tools that provide similar capabilities.

I own the professional version of Display Fusion, though I haven't relied on it much. At first I used it to keep my monitors in surround mode and mimic three separate windows, but it had some quirks and only functioned reliably about half the time. It was simpler to toggle surround on and off manually. Once you get comfortable with the hotkeys, the multimonitor feature in Windows 8.1 meets my needs. In Windows 7 I relied on UltraMon for similar functionality.

It varies based on your needs. However, most offer a 30-day test period followed by a free version with limited capabilities.

I purchased Display Fusion at a discount during a Steam promotion, but I no longer rely on it since A) Windows 8.1/10 supports multiple monitors smoothly, and B) Compiz on Linux replicates its functionality without cost.
