Several issues are occurring with my computer.
my computer is experiencing several issues and i'm unsure how to fix them, so i'm reaching out for assistance. the main problems are: i have 2 tb of storage but only about half works properly, causing storage errors, and my 3090 frequently drops frames during games, which should run smoothly without overheating. i've tried common fixes like reformatting the drive and updating gpu drivers, but there are other concerns too. i'm hoping you can help!
We would appreciate a bit more detail about your configuration. Which processor is connected with the GPU? What type of hard drive do you have (make and model), and how much space does it provide? Are you running the standard NTFS file system, or have you modified it (if unsure, NTFS is fine)? Also, could you launch Task Manager to identify any factors contributing to frame rate issues? Lastly, what storage-related errors are appearing?
Perform a disk check on your hard drive—it hasn't been done in six years. Disks are failing and causing read errors. Consider switching to an SSD or NVMe for better performance. A 2TB NVMe size is now common. Do these games run from the hard drive? It's like trying to drive a supercar with a tiny exhaust system.
The majority of those games are stored on the hard drive causing issues, though I didn’t realize this affected my SSD either—a 1 TB SSD is only using half its capacity, yet the games still perform poorly even there. I ran a CHKDSK scan and it reported no errors.
Save Crystal Disk Info and/or DiskGenius, then check the SMART data for all your drives. If anything falls below acceptable levels, the drive should be swapped out. You can also perform a Surface Scan, which functions like Check Disk but displays a sector map to identify any faulty areas.
I have both drives installed, and the SSD is a Samsung 870 EVO 1TB with the latest firmware.
all disks indicate they are functioning properly which doesn't provide any details
