I recently installed my wife's new computer. The main problem I face is that the Windows 10 Home product key I purchased from Newegg isn't being recognized by the OS on her PC. The activation error indicates it doesn't match a Pro version of Windows 10. I've looked into various solutions, including fresh installs of Windows 10, registry modifications, and using the Windows 10 help resources. I changed four registries to Home and restarted, but the installation still failed because it detected a Pro version. The issue seems linked to using her existing HDD with the new OS, and I've switched to an SSD for better performance. The hardware includes an ASUS 470X, Ryzen 2700x, a 1500W PSU, a Noctua cooler, a NVIDIA 960 GPU, and storage devices like a 500GB Evo 970 M.2 and a 1TB 960 Evo drive. The old Blue HDD is still present.

You might attempt the steps listed, though they're generally for updating rather than reducing versions. From an elevated Command Prompt: dism /online /Set-Edition:Core /AcceptEula /ProductKey:12345-67890-12345-67890-12345

I corrected my initial message. Please reload the page before using the code. (Remember to select /AcceptEula instead of /Accept-Eula).

Sadly, the attempt didn't succeed. I'm reaching out to Microsoft's disappointing customer service team.

I wasn't sure if that was the best choice.

I attempted to do that multiple times. The system identifies it as having Windows 10 Pro and then claims the Windows 10 Home key isn't valid.

Hmm, seems like you're pointing out something about the process. If you're not clearing it during setup, then it's not a fresh installation.

The new fresh install in the menu still includes the pro version somehow. I located a downloadable plug-in on the Microsoft site for fresh installs, but it indicates that Windows 10 Home isn't installed and simply closes without doing anything.

In the installer, select the bottom choice, then at the drive selection you don't merely click next—you manually format the partition before installing it. This is especially useful if you don’t have any data to retain on the drive.
