I possess a 'Embedded Broadcom 5720 1Gbps Dual Port Network Card (2 x Ports)' for a home NAS I'm acquiring second hand. I'm unsure about the purpose of the two ports. Can I utilize both to increase bandwidth, or is this intended for backup? Are there other functions for this setup? Thank you ahead of time.

Using a method called Link Aggregation or Bonding is necessary. THIS demands a managed switch that allows it. It won't improve speed just for one client when several are using the server together. It serves as a backup option.
