Setting up Windows on an external SSD
Yes, it's feasible to set up an external SSD for Windows installation and boot from it without using traditional partitions. You can create a bootable Windows installation media using tools like Rufus or Windows Installer, then use a dual-boot setup where both the SSD and your existing Windows 7 drive are recognized. This way, you can switch between operating systems seamlessly, similar to dual booting but with a single physical drive.
If the external SSD is visible, it makes sense. But I’d proceed cautiously during installation since Windows might choose to use the older Win7 drive as the default and replace it. Creating a boot manager (such as GRUB) could be tricky—I don’t have much experience with those setups.
The SSD will be connected using the appropriate interface, such as M.2 or SATA.
