Yes, you can run Windows on a secondary hard drive even after the primary one failed. You’ll need to format the new drive and reinstall the OS using a bootable USB or DVD. This way, your existing files stay intact while you set up the second drive as the operating system.

The steps you take depend on the extent of the HDD damage. If it's completely non-functional and won't even connect, things are hopeless. But if it starts up and boots, you have some options—just avoid sending it off to a data recovery shop, as it’s slow, costly, and might not help. It’s usually better to purchase a new drive instead. Also, keep an eye on your posts for guidance.

Yes, you can keep your Windows 8.1 files while installing Windows 8.1 on the second hard drive. Just make sure to back up everything first.

Unless you're ready to split your hard drive for a dangerous task, the response is no. I can explain the steps, but I won't be accountable for the outcome.

Yes, you can duplicate the files from the working drive to another drive and then install Windows there.

I’d likely be better off purchasing a fresh unit. If you do, yes, you can still utilize the second hard drive as a secondary storage option.

You can purchase another hard drive online at a reasonable price. Unless you're after an SSD, a decent 250 GB HDD is affordable right now, and even 1TB models are quite budget-friendly. Adding windows to that makes it even better. You can also repurpose the existing drive as a backup.
