You need to prepare a backup of your WD 500Gb Passport drive and install Windows 8.1 Pro on it. Then format the drive with a bootable installation media so you can recover quickly if the OS fails. After that, mount the formatted drive as a secondary storage device and keep it accessible for everyday use. This way you retain the ability to run your regular OS while having a reliable Windows backup ready.

Start from scratch using the Windows installation media, connect the USB drive and choose it as the installation source.

Keep your Windows key handy since it will request it each time you connect to a different motherboard

Tried this before mentions difficulty installing on that drive due to various reasons. I’m only intending to use it on my laptop, not others. Thanks for the tip! I actually own one of these, but some software requires Windows-only access—so yeah, that makes sense.

I'm currently using my phone since the blue screen on Windows kept appearing even though it was a new install after updating Avast and Chrome. It updated again like before, so I'll give it another try once I complete the OS refresh to understand why I need this.
