You can simply download a Windows ISO file and apply your personal Windows activation key, ensuring compliance with the law.

The optimal method involves obtaining the Windows 8.1 ISO from the Microsoft site for a 64-bit operating system if required. If you lack access to a 64-bit OS, you may secure a 90-day trial of Windows 8.1 Enterprise Edition via TechNet and use it to retrieve the ISO. Avoid downloading files from torrent websites, as they often contain alterations that may harm your system.

You might need to adjust settings depending on your system. Your Windows 7 laptop should work fine. Downloading the ISO file as instructed seems acceptable.

Pringless' approach is correct. However, you won't be able to obtain a 64-bit version on a 32-bit system.

I planned to follow the instructions @ Pringless gave me on my laptop, which were for Windows 7 64-bit. Then I would download the Windows 8.1 Pro ISO files onto a 4GB USB drive. When I first booted my new PC, I intended to tell it to start from that USB so I could install Windows there and also input the product key.

Yes, it’s recommended to create a bootable CD or USB stick for your device. This method ensures compatibility and reliability when restoring or recovering data.
