Setting up Windows 8.1 on a fresh device?
I received a Windows 8.1 installer from a friend and asked if I could borrow it. I’m really unsure about installing Windows on a new PC since I’ve never done it before. The disc had instructions that said it was only for reinstalling an operating system on a Dell computer. I wondered if that was accurate, especially because I was trying to save money by not purchasing a new Windows 8.1 license, which costs around 100 CAD.
Without a product key, the Dell disk won't function either; you need to purchase a license instead.
If it's only designed for Dell, it's exclusively for that brand. It comes ready with drivers, specific apps, and extra features. Using it could risk breaking the license on other machines. Basically, it's not a good choice.
Dell disks lack unnecessary bloatware. Although instructions suggest installing them alongside updates, I use them regularly. Since you don’t have a key, they’re essentially useless unless you own a Dell Windows 7 system, where you might be able to proceed safely.
You can find a product key through authorized retailers or official support channels. The price will vary depending on the item and your location.
